First Aid Kits

When God first put it on my heart to distribute first aid kits to village schools, I wasn’t quite sure how it would all come together, but just like God, it all did! After our last trip to Kenya I was determined that something had to be done to help village schools prevent infection from simple injuries like stepping on thorns and minor cuts. So, when I came back home I studied a book we bought called, Where There Is No Doctor, and started to research the supplies needed to put together a well stocked village first aid kit. Later, this book became the common thread that joined the hearts of everyone involved in this project. After shopping around, we found that we could buy most of the supplies at a relatively low cost and found that we could stock 5 first aid kits instead of 3, Yeah God!

The very next week we got a call from our good friend Candy McCue from North Bay Christian Fellowship, saying that she and Esther were coming to Uganda (both nurses). We asked them if they would be interested in helping us train village teachers in basic first aid. We later found out that Esther works in wound care and Candy works in labor and delivery, They were thrilled to be able to use their skills to meet the practical needs of village churches. So our prayer of being able to supply villages with first aid kits was answered and expanded to include professional first aid training.

The week before Candy and Esther arrived in Uganda we were scrambling to put together the prescription medicines for the kits. We also needed a local expert to give us advice about the best medicines to treat worms and different fungi very common in village schools. Through Gospel Messengers we met Pauline, a local doctor, who runs her own clinic. When Trevor first met her to discuss the project she asked if we had ever heard of the book, Where There Is No Doctor. Instantly, we realized we were on the same page in terms of what our expectations were for this project. Pauline helped us purchase the medicines and other supplies from a local bulk medical supply company and gave us great insight from her many years of experience of treating people in the village.

When Candy and Esther arrived, we had Pauline come over for dinner so that we could all get to meet each other and discuss the program. It was so funny when Esther said that her mom bought her a book that she thought would be helpful; of course it was, Where There Is No Doctor!

Pauline, Candy and Esther made an awesome team and it really was something to watch the hand of God bring all of this together. We were able to minister in 3 different areas and provide first aid kits and training for 5 different village schools. We hope to provide the 5th school with a first aid kit in November. The teachers were so desperate for training they came knowing they wouldn’t receive a kit this visit. We are so thankful for the different schools in Uganda and Kenya who participated in the first aid training. Their willing hearts to learn and questions squeezed as much out of our team that they could. Our desire is that we will be able to continue to meet the needs of village churches in practical ways.
